When you are writing an entry, there is a useful toolbar that appears at the top of the area where you type your entry. When you first see the toolbar, it will look like this:

From the left, the buttons are:
- Bold - to change text to Bold, select the text first and then click this button.
- Italic - to change text to Italic, select the text first and then click this button.
- Underline - to underline your text, select the text first and then click this button.
- Blockquote - this will switch formatting for the selected text to a quote format, good for displaying quotes from other people.
- Strikethrough - click this button to strikethrough selected text.
- Horizontal line - inserts a horizontal line all the way across the entry when clicked.
- Bulleted list - selected text lines will be converted into a bulleted list.
- Numbered list - selected text lines will be converted into a numbered list.
- Align left - selected text will be left-aligned in the entry.
- Align center - selected text will be centered in the entry.
- Align right - selected text will be right-aligned in the entry.
- Insert/edit link - will insert a link to another web page in your entry. For more information, see Adding links to your entries.
- Remove link - will remove a link from the selected text.
- Insert Emoji - click this to add an emoji at the spot where your cursor is. For more information, see Adding emoji to your entries.
- Fullscreen - this button switches your typing screen to a Fullscreen mode - the top and bottom areas of Open Diary's screen will disappear, and the typing area will fill your browser screen. To exit Fullscreen mode, just click the Fullscreen button a second time.
- Toolbar Toggle - this button is very important (and many of our users miss it)! Clicking this button will open up a second line of buttons on the toolbar, with additional functions.
After you click the Toolbar Toggle button, the toolbar will look like this:

From left to right on the second row of the toolbar, the functions are:
- Paragraph formatting - this dropdown lets you change the formatting of select text between regular text and several sizes of headings.
- Font selection - selected text can be changed to the font chosen from the dropdown. For more information, see Changing fonts in your entries.
- Text size - changes the size of selected text. For more information, see Changing text size in your entries.
- Justify - selected text will be justified, so that margins are even on both sides of the page.
- Text Color - changes the color of selected text.
- Paste as Text - this button toggles between paste modes. In normal paste mode, the system will try to clean up extra symbols and characters when pasting from other places like Microsoft Word. If you are copying text from another source, and it is not pasting correctly, try toggling this button on and pasting again - it may solve the problem.
- Clear formatting - clicking this button will remove all formatting (size, color, font, alignment, etc.) from the selected text.
- Special character - if you want to insert a special character that is not on your keyboard into your entry, like a copyright symbol, fraction symbol, yen symbol, etc., click this button to display a set of special characters that can be used. Click on the special character in the display to insert it into your entry.
- Superscript - selected text is made superscript.
- Subscript - selected text is made subscript.
- Decrease indenting - if the selected text is indented, indent will be reduced.
- Increase indenting - will add an indent to the selected text.
- Undo - performs an undo on the last operation from the keyboard. You can undo up to the last fifteen actions.
- Redo - will redo actions that have been undone.
- Keyboard shortcuts - will display a list of all keyboard shortcuts that will work when writing an entry.
